Story

As night fell over Macau, the laughter of the 3rd Macau International Comedy Festival rippled along the lakeshore. A once-tranquil stretch of water suddenly stirred — amid a symphony of music and light, a giant Pop Mart Molly slowly rose from the surface, treading upon the shimmering waves, making her entrance in the most impossible way onto the stage of the “Happiness · Joy Park” immersive musical lakeside show. And the dream-maker behind this breathtaking, magical moment that left the entire audience holding their breath in wonder was none other than us, 360 Inflatables.

Taking Molly onto the water — the very idea was brimming with whimsical comedy and challenge. We knew well that pouty-lipped, beret-wearing stubborn girl, but for this comedy festival, she was to transform into a water sprite, sporting a playful magician’s top hat and a sly yet heartwarming smirk at the corner of her mouth. She had to retain Molly’s authentic art-toy DNA, while also conveying the unbuttoned ease and merriment unique to comedy. On the design drafts, we deliberated endlessly over the angle of her slightly tilted head, the mischief gleaming in her big, lake-blue eyes as they gazed at the audience, and even ran lighting simulations on her water reflection in advance — striving to ensure that from any spot along the shore, the view would be a living, breathing painting.

The real battle began the moment the lake water lapped over our ankles. A waterborne inflatable is completely different from one on land: it must float lightly on the surface, yet hold its stance steady, withstanding Macau’s brackish sea breezes and the swings of temperature and humidity between day and night. We abandoned the conventional simple floating platform and tailor-designed an “invisible underwater ballet stage” for Molly — a massive buoyancy base with a multi-chamber structure, precisely fused to Molly’s body. The interior was partitioned into separate compartments, so that even in the event of accidental damage, the buoyancy would not fail. For the material, we chose a waterproof, UV-resistant, high-strength airtight fabric, and every heat-sealed seam underwent the strictest watertight testing. An intelligent constant-pressure system kept vigil day and night, ensuring that no matter the weather, she maintained that plump, crisp, cheeky look, as if ready to crack a joke at any second.

The installation was completed late at night by the lakeside. In Macau’s humid night breeze, we set out in a small boat and slowly unfurled the folded Molly over the water. The moment the blower roared to life, that flat silhouette suddenly came alive — the top hat puffed up, the skirt flounced out, and that signature pouty face gradually took on three-dimensional form amidst the interplay of water reflections and lights. When Molly finally stood firm and poised at the very heart of the lake, her underwater reflection mirroring the real figure in perfect harmony, everyone on site let out a muffled cheer in the stillness. We knew then that the magic of comedy had worked.

On the opening day of the festival, crowds surged along the lakeside promenade, everyone stopping to laugh in front of Molly on the water. Children pointed at her and imitated her pout, while young people raised their phones to take photos with her reflection. Molly floated there playfully on the lake, woven into the fabric of music, lights, and laughter, becoming the most joyous fulcrum of the entire “Happiness · Joy Park.”

From the giant Milk Dragon at Eastern Suburb Memory, to the blooming garden at Changsha IFS, and now to this buoyant waterborne comedy on the lake in Macau — 360 Inflatables has been constantly pushing the boundaries of imagination. We don’t just create inflatables; we use 360-degree thoroughness and craftsmanship to breathe upright vitality into every wildly creative idea. Because for us, life is a comedy that must always maintain a full and buoyant posture. A smile never, ever deflates.
